Great crested grebe

(Podiceps cristatus)

Like other grebes it is a water bird that resembles a short-tailed duck. It has a straight neck and pointed beak, and it catches fish during long immersions under water. In winter they can be seen in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Roses, near the beach, while in summer a few couples breed in the small ponds with fresher, deeper water, surrounded by thick canes.
