Cap de Creus Natural Park

The Cap de Creus Natural Park is the first maritime-terrestrial natural park in Catalonia. It has many natural and cultural values that are protected by diverse protection statuses, depending on the importance of the zone. One of these statuses is that of greatest protection in Catalonia: Integral Nature Reserve. The Cap de Creus has two of the four Integral Nature Reserves that are found in Catalonia: Cap de Creus in Cadaqués, and Cap Norfeu in Roses.

The Cap de Creus Integral Nature Reserve is the easternmost part of the Park and is characterised by its particular morphology which inspired artists such as Salvador Dalí, the author Josep Pla, etc. The effects of the tramuntana—the northern wind— and the salinity of the sea contribute to the forming of this landscape with great geological value thanks to the outcrops of metamorphic and granite rocks. In the coastal area, there are plants that are better adapted to the climate conditions of this zone, which, without a doubt, are the most interesting plant life in the Park and cannot be found in any other place along the Catalan coast. The most characteristic species are Armeria ruscinonensis, Limonium tremolsiiand, in particular, Seseli farrenyi, an authentic botanical gem, as it is not found in any other place in the world. These species are all protected species.

The park is accredited with:

A collaboration commitment between the entity and the territory to work on responsible, sustainable and quality tourism management.

Sant Pere de Rodes

Benedictine monastery of uncertain origin, a genuine gem of Catalan Romanesque art with constructions that date back from the 10thto the 18thcenturies.

In the Park there is a good sample of megalithic tombs. They include the Creu d’en Cobertella (Roses), the largest dolmen in Catalonia

This bay, that is a natural port and the only one that has ecological anchorage buoys to prevent anchoring onto the seagrass called Posidonia oceanica, is home to the Salvador Dalí House-Museum. The island of the same name has been owned by Girona Provincial Council since 1995, which, together with “La Caixa” Foundation and various volunteers, carried out a regeneration of the natural habitats through eliminating the exotic flora, mainly pigface (Carpobrotus sp.).

Tudela Natural Site

This area used to house the Club Med holiday centre and has been restored. It has geological outcrops of great importance, which include rocks such as S’Àliga and Es Camell, which were to inspire artists such as Salvador Dalí.

The Cap Norfeu is located in the south-east of the Cap de Creus peninsula, between Jóncols Bay to the north and Montjoi Bay to the south. It forms a narrow, long, curved peninsula which is very rocky and full of cliffs and natural caves. It reaches out two kilometres into the Mediterranean and closes the Gulf of Roses to the north. At the highest point of Cap Norfeu there are the remains of a watchtower called La Torre de Norfeu. It was built in around 1604, as part of the defence system in the Gulf of Roses against the corsairs. Today, only the first floor and the exterior wall, part of which was originally a cistern, still stand. The tower stopped being used as a military building when it was blown up by the French, in the second half of the 17thcentury, and was later used for agricultural purposes.
